Proposed Personal Conduct Policy – Three Stikes and You’re Out (Revision 1)

The BSA has always fostered a spirit of good will, sportsmanship, and courtesy between its owners.  We expect every owner in the BSA to treat each other both publicly and privately with respect and dignity.  Personal insults, demeaning comments, unsupported accusations, and persistent complaining and bickering will not be tolerated in our world chat.  We encourage owners to block other owners who they find annoying or have personal issues with, but the world still wants to foster a positive community experience both for itself and for those exploring the BSA from the outside.  If the commissioner deems any conversation or comment inappropriate by these guidelines, the owner will receive a private warning from the commissioner.  A second offense will be acknowledged publicly to the whole community by the commissioner and said owner will receive a final warning.  A third offense will result in immediate removal from the BSA.  An owner can and will receive multiple warnings for one conversation.  These warnings will carry over from season to season.  Private site mail or trade chat conversations should not be brought up in the league forum.  Bringing private conversations into the public world chat can be deemed an offense of this policy and result in a strike.  These inappropriate or abusive private conversations should immediately be taken up with customer support to be resolved by WIS guidelines and never brought to our public forum.   In the spirit of competition, conversation can get heated and debate is encouraged; we are simply discouraging our owners from raising those debates to a personal level.

20 Questions (Season27) – blinddog

We finish the season 27 20 questions series with blingdog.  He’s one of the few owners who understand the significance of rolling a 66.

1. Other than your screen name, what name can we call you? Jim 2. Married? Children? Pets? Just celebrated our 37th wedding anniversary. 3 kids, all out of college and working! One dog, Sherlock, got him at a local rescue facility. 3. City/State you live in? Hometown where you grew up? Syracuse, NY. Have been in central NY all our lives. 4. What do you do for a living and how long have you done it? Happily retired. Was a property/casualty underwriter for 25 years then worked for the government for 12 years. 5. Any special meaning for your WIS nickname? Your Big Sky team name? 6. How did you start on What If Sports? What have you played besides HBD? Tried the free sim for baseball and got reading about HBD and gave it a try. Started playing APBA in 1964. 7. Any hobbies or favorite pastimes besides HBD? Finally gave up coaching a few years ago when there was an admin change at our local HS. Was an asst there for awhile. My wife has turned me into a jazz fan (music, not Utah). Biggest new change is our first grandchild who will be 2 in August. 8. What is your list for the top 5 movies of all time? In no real order: Butch Cassidy and the SunDance Kid; Great Escape; Field of Dreams or the Natural; Most of the Connery and Craig Bond films. 9. What was the first album/cassette/CD you ever purchased? Probably Rubber Soul by the Beatles or Highway 61 by Dylan. 10. What sports team do you cheer for? The Yankees, SU Orange, Giants and Bills. 11. Who is going to win the World Series this season? I always think the Bombers will pull through but I do think the Nats have the talent if they get hot the secnd half. 12. If you could automatically put one player into the Baseball Hall of Fame who is not already in, who would you choose? 13. If you could go back in time and be a part of one team in any sport for one season, which team would you be a part of? 14. What is the most memorable sporting event you have attended live? WS in Pitt, 1971, WS IN boston in 75 WS in NY in 78. Saw Ernie Davis play for SU, Big East Championship in the Dome. 15. If WIS hired you for one to choose and develop a new game for the site, what game would you choose to make? NFL Dynasty 16. Tell us about your favorite HBD player? In our league it would be Orlando Lee. He was the first FA I spent big money on and he went on to earn his only MVP with us and our first WS championship. 17. Without giving way all of your secrets, what is your GM philosophy? It continues to evolve right now I tend not to overspend on pitching and have put together a solid if unspectacular staff. I try for Cs with a high PC and good up the middle defense to help the Ps out. 18. Do you have a rival in the Big Sky? If not, pick one! I guess shooter and dwhit as they have been in my division since I joined Big Sky. 19. If you could change one thing about HBD, what would you change? Would like to see stars emerge from the latter draft rounds. 20. Give us a prediction for your Big Sky team for this season. Rebuilding has started but if the offense starts hitting we have a good chance to win our division.

20 Questions (Season 27) – wlarson

Nearing the end of the 20 questions, it seems like everyone in the league is a Reds, Braves, or Mariners fan.  Original BSA owner wlarson continues that trend in his 20 questions.

1. Other than your screen name, what name can we call you?

Will

2. Married? Children? Pets?

Single

3. City/State you live in? Hometown where you grew up?

Born in Seattle, WA and still live here today.

4. What do you do for a living and how long have you done it?

Dev manager at Amazon.com.

5. Any special meaning for your WIS nickname? Your Big Sky team name?

Nope, just first initial and last name. Technically it should be Maui Noka Oi, a local saying that I picked up on vacation several years ago.

6. How did you start on What If Sports? What have you played besides HBD?

I was looking for a basketball sim late one night and discovered Hoops Dynasty. I really got into Gridiron Dynasty and had a pretty good run there.

7. Any hobbies or favorite pastimes besides HBD?

I play touch football on Saturdays in the Fall and Winter. In spring and summer I golf as often as the weather permits.

8. What is your list for the top 5 movies of all time?

Hard to pick just five, but I’ll go with Pulp Fiction, Good Will Hunting, Swingers, Bull Durham, Miami Blues.

9. What was the first album/cassette/CD you ever purchased?

Thriller(!)

10. What sports team do you cheer for?

Big Seahawks and Huskies fan. Not much going on for the M’s these days and the Sonics move to OKC has basically killed my interest in the NBA, though Durant is darn good.

11. Who is going to win the World Series this season?

Not the M’s!

12. If you could automatically put one player into the Baseball Hall of Fame who is not already in, who would you choose?

I feel like Edgar Martinez needs to end up in the HOF. Not sure if a career DH will ever make it, but he was the core of our lineup for some great seasons and is the best DH in MLB history. We shrugged off Griffey & ARod leaving, but our offense has struggled since Edgar called it quits.

13. If you could go back in time and be a part of one team in any sport for one season, which team would you be a part of?

95 Mariners. Amazing finish + Angel’s collapse to make the playoffs and 1st round win vs Yankees.

14. What is the most memorable sporting event you have attended live?

I had season tickets when the Sonics played the Spurs a few years ago, the last really good Sonics team. We lost in six, but it was a great season and playoff run.

15. If WIS hired you for one to choose and develop a new game for the site, what game would you choose to make?

Instead of a new game I’d look at overhauling GD or HD to have more strategy and a graphical representation of the play by play. The strategy and stats are fun, but reading play by play is a bit dated.

16. Tell us about your favorite HBD player?

Ryne Magruder has been a beast and will end his career with a .900+ OPS. He’s been the core of my lineup for a long time is struggling badly since his decline kicked in.

17. Without giving way all of your secrets, what is your GM philosophy?

Strong pitching and fielding are my keys, though this season hasn’t had a lot of either. I don’t spend much on free agency, mostly just bargain shopping to fill 1-2 needs.

18. Do you have a rival in the Big Sky? If not, pick one!

Shooter or David. Lots of GD battles back in the day.

19. If you could change one thing about HBD, what would you change?

Let us do budgeting and coach re-hiring at any point in the offseason. It can really hurt a team if you miss 1-2 days during that the first week of the season.

20. Give us a prediction for your Big Sky team for this season.

70 wins in the midst of a rebuild. Will be back in the running after rebuilding my pitching staff.

20 Questions (Season 27) – holleybard

Ever imagine you’d see a BSAer on ESPN or hear them host a radio show or buy their book or write for the fish wrap? holleybard is the guy that’s done all of those, though I am much more impressed with his knowledge of Swenson’s. 1. Other than your screen name, what name can we call you? Michael.

2.  Married? Children? Pets?  I’ve been married for nearly six years. It’s been a busy six years, too: we have two boys (4 and 2) and a baby girl (8 months). We also have two pugs. So if you’re imagining a totally wild and unintentionally comic household, you’d be correct.

3. City/State you live in? Hometown where you grew up?  I live in Boston. I’ve been here for nearly 20 years. I grew up in Akron, Ohio, which is now known as the home of LeBron, but used to be known for lots of quirky things (the Soapbox Derby, a straight-from-the-1950s burger joint called Swenson’s, and rubber…lots and lots of rubber).

4. What do you do for a living and how long have you done it?  I’m a sportswriter and broadcaster. It’s what I’ve wanted to do since I was 9 or 10 years old, so I’m very blessed to be doing it, and doing it in an incredibly passionate sports town like Boston. I started out at the Boston Globe, and got the chance to work with some extremely talented people there for 10 years. For the last eight years, I’ve been doing sports talk radio and writing books.

5. Any special meaning for your WIS nickname? Your Big Sky team name? My screen name is simply my last name combined with bard; who doesn’t love a bard? I’m a huge Ohio State football fan — football and football only, by the way — so Script is somewhat of an homage to the script Ohio by the Ohio State band. Go Bucks.

6. How did you start on What If Sports? What have you played besides HBD?  One of our radio callers actually mentioned it before a Patriots game. I decided to check it out, and I got hooked on it. I experimented with many of the games, but I never thought to try HBD until recently. I can’t see doing anything else. I love all aspects of team-building in real life (I used to spend hours dreaming up teams as a kid), so that’s my draw here. I also like the idea of turning around bad to mediocre teams. I say idea because I’m not naive enough to believe that it will actually happen as quickly as I think it will or in the fashion I think it will. We’ll see.

7. Any hobbies or favorite pastimes besides HBD?  If I’m not watching sports, I’m hanging out with my wife and kids. And if I’m not hanging out with the family, I’m trying to steal a 35-minute nap after being worn out from the Three Kid Workout.

8.  What is your list for the top 5 movies of all time? Tough question. I like good, well-told stories, regardless of the genre. So my list today would be the first two Godfather movies, Annie Hall, Pulp Fiction and Malcolm X.It’s a fluid list, except for the Godfather flicks. Tough to beat that story. And that cast. Ridiculous.

9.  What was the first album/cassette/CD you ever purchased? You’re trying to shame us all with this question, aren’t you? I actually remember making homemade tapes and taping songs off the radio. Seems crazy now in the satellite radio era. I don’t know which one was first, but right around the same time I bought Prince, Whitesnake, INXS, Ziggy Marley, and Eric B & Rakim.

10.What sports team do you cheer for?  I root for all Boston pro sports teams. When I moved here for the job, I watched as a so-called objective journalist. But true objectivity doesn’t exist with human beings, so I became emotionally invested in all of them. For college football, well, you already know about that obsession.

11.Who is going to win the World Series this season?  The Rangers.

12. If you could automatically put one player into the Baseball Hall of Fame who is not already in, who would you choose?  It’s been said here already, and I’ll agree: Pete Rose. And I’m not trying to gloss over his flaws. We can talk about all the terrible things he did as manager of the Reds, and how he lied until he was ready to confess on his terms (he got paid for it). Fine. Still a Hall of Famer. With warts. So be it.

13.  If you could go back in time and be a part of one team in any sport for one season, which team would you be a part of?  The original Dream Team. Magic, Michael, Larry. To hang out with them, listen to them talk about the game, watching them practice, watching people watch them…I’m sure it was amazing.

14. What is the most memorable sporting event you have attended live? It’s a tie, from opposite ends of New England Patriots history. I was in the Superdome when they won their first Super Bowl against the heavily favored Rams. It was the ultimate team achievement. I remember Belichick saying in confidence, before the game, “Oh, they’re definitely more talented than we are…” I was also in Arizona when the Patriots needed one more win for perfection and couldn’t get it against the Giants. Terrible result for the Patriots, but an intense and great game.

15. If WIS hired you for one to choose and develop a new game for the site, what game would you choose to make?  I’d rule against expansion and start a campaign to improve what’s already here. I know that’s not the question, but I think some of the things that people have a problem with (take coach hiring in HBD, for example) are ignored because the WIS “focus” is spread too thin. Another thing that used to kill me in simleague baseball is when teams, with an entire lineup of players at 90%, would win playoff games and series against equal teams at 100%. Drove me crazy. I’d even send tickets on it, just trying to understand the logic. They’d always tell me that I was looking at the percentages in the wrong way, which I’m sure I was, but it never made me feel better. Still doesn’t. You’ve found my sore subject.

16. Tell us about your favorite HBD player? Haven’t been playing long enough to have one yet. Maybe it’s Ben Sherman; he got so much attention from this deal with cwalden, he must be a big deal. Just teasing.

17. Without giving way all of your secrets, what is your GM philosophy? I’m a newbie who’s posted exactly one winning season so far, so my philosophy holds no water right now. In general, though, I believe in being bold. I like that this game approximates real life, but it’s still a game. This is the time to take some chances, whether it’s with a big trade or the style of team that you build. I’m pretty flexible on the type of overall team that I have, as long as I have a true ace and a dominant number three hitter (right now, the Script have neither).

18. Do you have a rival in the Big Sky? If not, pick one!  I thought I was going to have a league of rivals if that Corcoran trade had been vetoed! For now, I’ll go with ginobili. I won’t get too deep into the specifics, but I’ll just say that he was very interesting to deal with in trade discussions. He knows what I mean. So although his team is worlds better than mine, I’m hopeful that we can pin an impactful loss or two on him along the way.

19.  If you could change one thing about HBD, what would you change?  Take away the penalty on budget transfers. It’s baseball, not some bank scolding you for an early withdrawal. Sometimes, in real life, GMs can talk their owners into “going for it,” and they can get permission to add another $7 or $8 million to payroll. It’s part of the game. If you shuffle dollars within your own budget, who cares? Let the “penalty” be a natural byproduct of some impulsive moves (example: you might not be able to sign your draft picks).

20. Give us a prediction for your Big Sky team for this season.  We’re rebuilding, and we’re in an excellent division. This won’t be pretty. We’ve already been relegated to the inside pages of the Columbus Dispatch, and no media members cover us on the road. 65-97.
