Shoot for the stars baby.

20 Questions (Season 27) – jfuchs31

One of our newest members who is also an actual Big Sky Alumni, not just a pretend football coach like most of us.  So if Dale Murphy, Garth Brooks, Roger Maris, North Dakota, and the Creighton Blue Jays peak your interest, then you have to get to know jfuchs31.

1. Other than your screen name, what name can we call you? You can call me Jeff

2. Married? Children? Pets? I am married to my wife Jessica; we have been married for 4 years this summer We have 2 kids Garret 7 and Cora 2 We have one pet kitten named Murphy

3. City/State you live in? Hometown where you grew up? I am from Devils Lake, ND and have lived here all of my life, except when I went to college at the University of North Dakota.

4. What do you do for a living and how long have you done it? I am a High School Social Studies Teacher, I have been working at my current for 7 years and this is where I met my wife. I have been a teacher for 10 years, the first 3 I just subbed in Devils Lake.

5. Any special meaning for your WIS nickname? Your Big Sky team name? No special meaning to my WIS nickname just my name and favorite number

My Big Sky nickname came because in the eastern part of North Dakota is usually going through spring flooding. They were predicting it was going to be a major flood in Fargo this year so I figured the name would fit.

6. How did you start on What If Sports? What have you played besides HBD? I have been checking out WIS sports for a few years before I actually joined. Finally a buddy of mine goes check out this website, so we tried out the Hoops Dynasty league. After I tried it out and I liked it so I thought I would try out the Gridiron Dynasty. But my favorite sport has always been baseball so I thought I would try it out and have been playing it for a couple of years. I am currently playing the Soccer dynasty, but don’t really follow that team to much.

7. Any hobbies or favorite pastimes besides HBD? I have been a girls’ basketball coach for about 6 years and have also coached some baseball in the summer. I play some softball and do some occasional deer hunting. I also play videogames especially sports games, as well as catch as many sporting events on TV as I can. Sometimes Direct TV can be my best friend, and sometimes my daughter will ask to watch sports with me especially basketball.

8. What is your list for the top 5 movies of all time? I have a tie up top between Hoosiers and Field of Dreams 3 – For Love of the Game 4 – Armageddon 5 – She Out My League

9. What was the first album/cassette/CD you ever purchased? I am not 100% sure I think it was something Garth Brooks

10. What sports team do you cheer for? I am a big Atlanta Braves fan, I grew up watching TBS and catching every game I could. I am also a New England Patriots fan, for football. Being close to Minnesota I get some crap from friends about not liking the Minnesota teams, but don’t really like the Twins or Kirby Puckett after the 1991 World Series. I also follow Nebraska Cornhuskers, Creighton Bluejays, Milwaukee Bucks and both University of North Dakota and North Dakota State

11. Who is going to win the World Series this season? Being a fan of the Braves, I am going to say the Braves but they might have to cut down on some strikeouts first. They retooled the lineup and got a steal from Arizona with Justin Upton. I think they will be playing the Tigers or at least hoping it will be the Braves and whatever American League team.

12. If you could automatically put one player into the Baseball Hall of Fame who is not already in, who would you choose? I would say my favorite All-time player Dale Murphy, he was would I would watch when I was young. He is why I grew up a Braves fan, he was always playing hard even when the team was losing. If I could have one more I would have to say Roger Maris being from ND, and they both are the only players to win back to back MVPs and not in the Hall (not counting Barry Bonds).

13. If you could go back in time and be a part of one team in any sport for one season, which team would you be a part of? I would have to say I wish I could go back and be part of the 1995 Atlanta Braves. Play infield behind the great pitching staff they had would have been fun.

14. What is the most memorable sporting event you have attended live? I haven’t been to a lot of live events. My favorite was the first time the Braves played against the Twins in interleague play. My most memorable moment was when my wife’s cousin got married in Seattle a couple weeks after we married. We went to a couple of Mariners games and we made it for batting practice and I caught a couple of balls in left field. That was the first time I had ever gotten a ball at a professional game that I attended.

15. If WIS hired you for one to choose and develop a new game for the site, what game would you choose to make? I would try to develop a professional football or basketball game; I like the pro game on WIS, not really a fan of the college games. I found a better college game on a different website that I play. For an NBA game you could have a developmental league as well to play some of your rookies. I have heard people ask for a hockey game, but just not into much hockey.

16. Tell us about your favorite HBD player? My favorite WIS player is tough, I would say Tito Gang in Gehrig and Adam Rucker in Metropolis, and mainly because those are 2 players I have drafted and developed to the big leagues. Rucker was interesting because I took over a good team and didn’t get a high drafter pick and he fell to me with a potential rating of 86.

17. Without giving way all of your secrets, what is your GM philosophy? I usually end up trying to pick up one big time player when I start a team, and see if I can make a run at the playoffs. It really hasn’t worked all that well, so when I joined this league I thought I would try something different. I traded my potential free agents to pick up some good prospects. Then I bought cheaper players that could be upgrades at some positions. So we will see if this works better.

18. Do you have a rival in the Big Sky? If not, pick one! It is tough since I am new to the league, so I will say bretrogers. I am only saying that because he won the league last year, and to be the best you have to beat the best.

19. If you could change one thing about HBD, what would you change? There are a couple things I would change, one would be scouting. I think we should be able to spend money on scouts for different regions of the US and Canada. Then we would get better scouting reports on the area we spent the most money. Another thing is the draft, I would like to see players slide in the draft and be really good players, like a Mike Piazza. I know they do it with Diamonds in the Rough, but most of those I see aren’t all that great.

20. Give us a prediction for your Big Sky team for this season. Right now I am hoping for a .500 team, anything above that would be great.

20 Questions (Season 27) – andynomore

An original BSA owner who stayed with us even through law school and the bar, learn more about andynomore.

1. Other than your screen name, what name can we call you? Andy

2. Married? Children? Pets? Married with a high strung pit bull and my wife’s dirty cat.

3. City/State you live in? Hometown where you grew up? Richmond, VA, where I’ve lived for over 20 years.

4. What do you do for a living and how long have you done it? I work as a corporate attorney, negotiating contracts. I’ve been doing this for almost two years, after taking the bar in 2011. Before law school, I worked as a chemist.

5. Any special meaning for your WIS nickname? Your Big Sky team name? Bad portmanteau of Andy and Faith No More. Edgar Allan Poe.

6. How did you start on What If Sports? What have you played besides HBD? Started years ago after seeing the early Bill Simmons mention of the baseball leagues. Fell hard for Gridiron Dynasty and rejoiced when HBD was finalized.

7. Any hobbies or favorite pastimes besides HBD? I love craft beer, good coffee, science fiction, and live music. The bands I’ve seen the most are QOTSA and Tool.

8. What is your list for the top 5 movies of all time? In no particular order: Big Lebowski Inglourious Basterds Empire Strikes Back Vertigo A Clockwork Orange

9. What was the first album/cassette/CD you ever purchased? Pearl Jam- Ten was the first cassette, Alice in Chains- Dirt first CD

10. What sports team do you cheer for? Barves, Redskins, W&M Tribe (sensing a theme?)

11. Who is going to win the World Series this season? Barves, because it’s impossible to predict, so might as well

12. If you could automatically put one player into the Baseball Hall of Fame who is not already in, who would you choose? Tom Glavine. He’ll get in eventually, so strike that. Bagwell is being unfairly blackballed.

13. If you could go back in time and be a part of one team in any sport for one season, which team would you be a part of? 1995 Braves. They took it to a really good Indians team in the strike shortened year World Series.

14. What is the most memorable sporting event you have attended live? Drove for 8 plus hours to ATL from RVA to see Braves-Dbacks in the 2001 playoffs. Schilling goes complete game, Ks 12, then we drove back the next day in complete misery.

15. If WIS hired you for one to choose and develop a new game for the site, what game would you choose to make? It will likely be a common answer, so I’ll vary the answer by saying I would develop an NFL GM game and tie it to college Gridiron Dynasty.

16. Tell us about your favorite HBD player? Philip Coleridge. Glad he came back to Richmond.

17. Without giving way all of your secrets, what is your GM philosophy? These days I’m not sure I have a philosophy! I’ve proven VERY bad at rebuilding.

18. Do you have a rival in the Big Sky? If not, pick one! Until my recent run of bad teams, I enjoyed finishing second (or third) to Sweetsalve through the first 17 seasons of Big Sky.

19. If you could change one thing about HBD, what would you change? More unpredictability with prospects and better international process.

20. Give us a prediction for your Big Sky team for this season. Continued poor performance, but some of the youngsters may get promoted this season.

20 Questions (Season 27) – habaccord

Thank you, Zach, for making me know that I am not the only one with a random and senseless combination of words to make up my screen name! If you don’t know him already, get to know hadaccord.

1. Other than your screen name, what name can we call you? You can call me Paul or Zach.

2. Married? Children? Pets? Married for almost 6 years. I have a 3 year old son. No pets (too many allergies in the family).

3. City/State you live in? Hometown where you grew up? I was born and raised in Montreal (hence the “Hab” in Habaccord). Been living in Ottawa for 20+ years now.

4. What do you do for a living and how long have you done it? I am a Sports Administrator for a National Sport Organization in Canada. I am responsible for working with coaches and athletes for 4 different National Teams (Men – Women, Senior – Junior). I’ve worked for a variety of sports over the past 20 years.

5. Any special meaning for your WIS nickname? Your Big Sky team name? Poor planning on my part. Hab from my love of the Canadiens, and Accord from the car I was driving at the time of sign-up (lame, I know).

6. How did you start on What If Sports? What have you played besides HBD? Hockey drew me in. Played some Football and Basketball, and Finnski got me into Baseball (to take over the Rochester team for Sabres many, many season ago).

7. Any hobbies or favorite pastimes besides HBD? Curling, golf and hockey, time permitting (see 3 year old son above!)

8. What is your list for the top 5 movies of all time? Same trouble as Vance… but here goes: Sixth Sense; The Usual Suspects; Saving Private Ryan; The Good, The Bad and The Ugly; Bridge Over the River Kwai.

9. What was the first album/cassette/CD you ever purchased? Styx – Pieces of Eight

10. What sports team do you cheer for? Canadiens/Hockey, 49ers/NFL and gave up on baseball after the Expos left Montreal. Yet, I still love the strategy of assembling a fictional team.

11. Who is going to win the World Series this season? see #10 above

12. If you could automatically put one player into the Baseball Hall of Fame who is not already in, who would you choose? see #10 above

13. If you could go back in time and be a part of one team in any sport for one season, which team would you be a part of? Montreal Expos in 1993 (?)… I forget exactly now, but it was one of many strike years, where they were leading the entire league at the time of work stoppage and they lost the entire year. Would like to have seen that season through to see what would have happened in the World Series, since the entire team was basically disbanded the next year.

14. What is the most memorable sporting event you have attended live? Expos post-season game losing to the Dodgers on “Blue Monday”. Shitty memory, but great atmosphere to be in during the game.

15. If WIS hired you for one to choose and develop a new game for the site, what game would you choose to make? Nothing comes to mind.

16. Tell us about your favorite HBD player? Geronimo Flores. Poor guy lost more games with Rochester after giving up 2 runs or less than anyone in the history of HBD. Traded him away for 3 solid MLers.

17. Without giving way all of your secrets, what is your GM philosophy? I’ve never believed in the “total rebuild” (but maybe I should!). I have always tried to keep a competitive team by finding 1 or 2 Intl or FA each season to keep stocked, and hope that 1 drafted player moves up each season as well.

18. Do you have a rival in the Big Sky? If not, pick one! Finnski, for fun since he introduced me to the game. But Hank (Bombers) because I have very rarely ever managed to finish ahead of him.

19. If you could change one thing about HBD, what would you change? The amateur draft. Every owner should see the best 12 – 15 players even with only 2 million in Scouting. Difference should come in accuracy of ratings for the next 250 guys based on how much you’ve spent.

20. Give us a prediction for your Big Sky team for this season. If Wathan and Sosa can pitch to the level of their contracts, and my hitting keeps us in the top half of the league, I think we can contend for a Wild Card. The bullpen should be solid and I always like my team defence (even if I have to sacrifice a bit at SS this year to try to get someone who bats more than his body weight!)

20 Questions (Season 27) – cincyreds90

Come meet another new Big Sky Alumni owner! Sorry other new owners, but based solely on his screen name, I’m declaring this the best new owner in the BSA.  Welcome cincyreds90!

1. Other than your screen name, what name can we call you? Real name is David…but you can call me Daddy 2. Married? Children? Pets? Married with a 3yr old daughter and a 4yr old son. We have a 7yr old St Bernard named Brewtus (named after the Brewtus from Applebees which is what I was drinking when me and the wife met). 3. City/State you live in? Hometown where you grew up? Currently live in Bethel, just moved in with the in laws while my house is being built there. I grew up in Owenton, KY which is in the middle of nowhere. 4. What do you do for a living and how long have you done it? I am a Network Administrator. I have been doing various IT work since I turned 20. Amazing how far a 2yr degree can get ya. 5. Any special meaning for your WIS nickname? Your Big Sky team name? Pretty obvious what my screen name is for. Wire to wire championship that swept the steriod loving bash brothers in the World Series. My team name for Blue Sky has no meaning at all, just sounded good. 6. How did you start on What If Sports? What have you played besides HBD? I am strictly an HDB guy, I tried something with basketball but I didnt get as involved. I started because I got a free trial and I got addicted immediately. It is not a shock for me to check my teams 3-10 times an hour and stay up for the am cycles. 7. Any hobbies or favorite pastimes besides HBD? I bleed blue and was brainwashed at birth to be a fan of the greatest basketball program ever, the Kentucky Wildcats. I am also a loyal UK football fan, which is not always easy. Most sports I will watch, not including cheerleading, soccer, or hockey. I watch as much MMA as possible. Having 2 kids has really taken a lot of my hobbies away, however, before our house fire 2 yrs ago I had a collection of probably 350-400 bobbleheads. That number is unfortunately at only around 20 now. We are a camping family…but we dont rough it at all. I have a 36ft travel trailer with all the needs. 8. What is your list for the top 5 movies of all time? Gees, I have to watch Disney movies all the time now…Pass 9. What was the first album/cassette/CD you ever purchased? This was either MC Hammer or Vanilla Ice, but I am not sure which. I think I was around 10yrs old. I even had the lines cut in the side of my head like Vanilla Ice, I was so rad. 10. What sports team do you cheer for? Kentucky Wildcats, Cincinnati Reds, and any SEC football team. 11. Who is going to win the World Series this season? Stupid question, Cincinnati Reds. Once they get healthy with their ace Cueto on the mound, look out. If Kay Bruce could learn to make contact then the sky is the limit for him. Brandon Phillips and Joey Votto are the best in the business at their positions. I havent even mentioned Choo, Chapman, Latos, Bailey, Cingrani, Hanigan, etc, etc 12. If you could automatically put one player into the Baseball Hall of Fame who is not already in, who would you choose? Ken Griffey Jr. He was, is, and always will be my favorite player of all time. Injured repeatedly while giving it his all or he would be the all time HR king. Cincinnati fans were morons when it came to him. Cant wait to see him get into the HOF, I will be there. 13. If you could go back in time and be a part of one team in any sport for one season, which team would you be a part of? 2012 Kentucky Wildcats. They truly loved the game and it was amazing to be a fan of them. Playing for that team wouldve been awesome. Not to mention they beat Louisville in the final four, epic. 14. What is the most memorable sporting event you have attended live? Been to some Reds playoff games which were great, despite losing. Anytime you get to watch games in Rupp Arena it is like a dream come true. However, seeing UFC and Strikeforce events in person is something that is not able to be described. The fans are so into the fighters and have become very intelligent when it comes to submissions. Excitement at MMA events is easily the most memorable. 15. If WIS hired you for one to choose and develop a new game for the site, what game would you choose to make? 16. Tell us about your favorite HBD player? Albert Mondesi, in my 1530Homer league he is my horse. One of the best pitchers ever in the league which is saying something in that league. 3 CY in the past 4 seasons and just turned 30. Led my team to the WS title last season. 17. Without giving way all of your secrets, what is your GM philosophy? Go big or go home. I hate losing so rebuilding is tough for me, but I am confident that I will turn it all around. 18. Do you have a rival in the Big Sky? If not, pick one! pirateswin2, he is the division winner from last yr so he is the one I will look to take down…in a couple of yrs. 19. If you could change one thing about HBD, what would you change? I wish there was a great phone app for it. My addiction has me checking on the phone alot and sometimes it can be a hassle. 20. Give us a prediction for your Big Sky team for this season. My team is really gonna suck but will be better than last yr. Rebuild is in full effect, but I still made some signings of pitchers so that I can at least win some games.

No strong opinion 16.  Tell us about your favorite HBD player?

I drafted a guy in my first season at Hunter (first world I joined). He is still playing for a team, so that is cool that I didn’t screw up my first pick.

17. Without giving way all of your secrets, what is your GM philosophy?

I value contact the least out of the main hitting ratings. I don’t really see the point in putting a lot into advanced scouting. 18. Do you have a rival in the Big Sky? If not, pick one!

I think players do not test out free agency enough. 20. Give us a prediction for your Big Sky team for this season.

I think I made some slight improvements on the team, so I am hoping for 85+ wins.

20 Questions (Season 27) – crazyjoe02

Be careful, he’ll put the kibosh on you.  Or take pictures of you in the shower with his telephoto lens.  And he’s a big fan of operas and clowns.  Meet Crazy Joe Davola – or our Big Sky Version of him anyways.  (My apologies if you are not a Seinfeld fan and are really confused)

1. Other than your screen name, what name can we call you?

Joe

2. Married? Children? Pets?

Yes, No, One very hyper Cocker Spaniel

3. City/State you live in? Hometown where you grew up?

Winter Springs, FL. I was born and grew up in a suburb of Cincinnati.

4. What do you do for a living and how long have you done it?

I am the Computer Teacher for an Elementary School in Casselberry, FL. I have been teaching for seven years now.

5. Any special meaning for your WIS nickname? Your Big Sky team name?

CrazyJoe was a nickname I picked up in High School after a character on Seinfeld.   The Communists just come from alliteration and I thought I could make a cool logo. Plus the modified Mr. Red looks good in Red and Yellow. Being the Communists it’s also totally ok to still call this team the Cincinnati “Reds.”

6. How did you start on What If Sports? What have you played besides HBD?

I have been a member of WiS since 2001. I don’t remember how I found out about it but it started in Cincinnati so I’m sure I heard about it from a friend or on the radio or something. I went to several of the coach gatherings when the founder used to have them from time to time. It was great to meet other managers in person and give direct feedback to the people who ran the site on how to improve the games. I have platyed every game on WiS at one point or another. Right now I only play HBD and in a few Progressives in standard WiS Baseball.

7. Any hobbies or favorite pastimes besides HBD?

I love working with computers and my wife and I just bought a house so I have lots of little projects around the house to work on.

8. What is your list for the top 5 movies of all time?

Field of Dreams A League of Their Own The Sandlot Major League Bull Durham

9. What was the first album/cassette/CD you ever purchased?

No idea. If I had to guess I think it’d have to be the Soundtrack to Dangerous Minds. Michelle Pfiffer was hot and I was really into Coolio’s Gangsta’s Paradise.

10. What sports team do you cheer for?

Any and all of the Cincinnati teams (Reds, Bengals, Bearcats, Cyclones, etc.) Since moving to Florida I have also become a Rays fan as their the closest MLB team to where I live, athough they don’t play real baseball in the AL. The 2008 World Series in Tampa was a fantastic experience and still the only World Series I’ve ever attended in person.

11. Who is going to win the World Series this season?

The Reds over the Rays in 6 games.

12. If you could automatically put one player into the Baseball Hall of Fame who is not already in, who would you choose?

Pete Rose. It’s a Hall of Fame not a Hall of Morality. His on the field accomplishments should put him there (just like this off the field accomplishments should keep him from working in the game as a manager.)

13. If you could go back in time and be a part of one team in any sport for one season, which team would you be a part of?

The 1975 or 1976 Reds. They dominated baseball like no other team before or since.

14. What is the most memorable sporting event you have attended live?

The 2008 World Series Game 1 in Tampa. The Rays lost but the Trop was rocking.

15. If WIS hired you for one to choose and develop a new game for the site, what game would you choose to make?

Probably an NFL GridIron Dynasty.

16. Tell us about your favorite HBD player?

Its a tie between Willie Seanez and Hades Springer. They carried by original Communists with their power numbers. They were cogs in the successful teams I had at the inception of this world. If they weren’t already in the middle of their careers when the world was created I think they would have both put up enough power numbers to get them into the Hall.

17. Without giving way all of your secrets, what is your GM philosophy?

Homeruns are sexy! Ladies love the longballs!

18. Do you have a rival in the Big Sky? If not, pick one!

Toledo and Richmond and I fought for the division crown back and forth my first time around (the three of us combined to represent the NL in four of the first six seasons of the world) so I’d have to say they are both rivals and I look forward to renewing my rivalry with them now that I’m back in Cincinnati.

19. If you could change one thing about HBD, what would you change?

The coach hiring process is awful. We should be able to offer multi year deals.

20. Give us a prediction for your Big Sky team for this season.

I think we’ll surprise some people and we have a great shot at making the playoffs. We have a nice combination of Power and average guys and our pitching is vastly improved from last year.

20 Questions (Season 27) – ginobili

The first owner to get their questions into me was ginobili, owner of the Huntington Catholics.  If you like Al Pacino, NBA look a likes, and Bill Buckner, he’s your man.

1. Other than your screen name, what name can we call you? Justin

2. Married? Children? Pets? Married yes for 10 years now. I have 3 children. One boy (9) and two girls (8) and (6). We have two cats.

3. City/State you live in? Hometown where you grew up? I live in Alabama. I grew up in Gadsden.

4. What do you do for a living and how long have you done it? I am in the manufacturing business and have been there for 8 to many long years. I am also a full time student at the University of Phoenix majoring in Computer Programming and Database Web Design.

5. Any special meaning for your WIS nickname? Your Big Sky team name? My friends gave me the nickname ginobili because I look like a younger and handsome version of Manu Ginobili of the San Antonio Spurs but I have hair on my head. The 04 was my softball number when I played with those guys that gave me the nickname. I chose Huntington because I like the emblem and Catholics because I’m Catholic.

6. How did you start on What If Sports? What have you played besides HBD? I started a few years back playing GD. I can’t remember how I came across it but I enjoyed it. I now have dropped all my GD teams and soon to drop my HD team and just focus on HBD.

7. Any hobbies or favorite pastimes besides HBD? I coach my girls 8 and under softball team. That’s about all I have time for with a full time job, full time school, and three kids.

8. What is your list for the top 5 movies of all time? Casino, Bookies, Two For The Money, The Change Up, and anything with Al Pacino.

9. What was the first album/cassette/CD you ever purchased? I have no clue. I can’t remember that far back.

10. What sports team do you cheer for? NBA- Dallas Mavericks MLB- Boston Redsox& Atlanta Braves NFL- Carolina Panthers NCAAF- Notre Dame, Oregon, Auburn NCAA Basketball- Duke Bluedevils

11. Who is going to win the World Series this season? In the Big Sky it will be Toledo defeating Las Vegas. In real life it will be (wishful thinking) Boston beating Atlanta.

12. If you could automatically put one player into the Baseball Hall of Fame who is not already in, who would you choose? The Big Sky-my pitcher (Juan Veras) MLB- Barry Bonds. He deserves it. He has never failed a steroid test.

13. If you could go back in time and be a part of one team in any sport for one season, which team would you be a part of? I would be a part of the 1986 Boston Redsox team and I would tell Buckner to make sure if the ball is hit his way to get the glove on the ground.

14. What is the most memorable sporting event you have attended live? I don’t have time to attend much but my most memorable would be the 2010 season watching Cam Newton play in person at Auburn.

15. If WIS hired you for one to choose and develop a new game for the site, what game would you choose to make? I would create an NFL game to where each world was connected to the GD worlds and when you are in D1 you can put in an app to join the NFL and move up from GD.

16. Tell us about your favorite HBD player? Juan Veras has to be my favorite since this is my second time around with him but Alcids Romero is right there with him. I picked up Romero last season when my 1B went down to injury ending his career and Romero went off. I just hate I couldn’t use him in the playoffs since I picked him up so late in the season.

17. Without giving way all of your secrets, what is your GM philosophy? I don’t have any. I set my pitching up by who I think is the best at each rotation and my hitting up by their stats.

18. Do you have a rival in the Big Sky? If not, pick one! Sabres!! We love to mouth at each other.

19. If you could change one thing about HBD, what would you change? I would make the hitting ratings more understandable. Say you got a guy with a 30 CNT 80 PWR 40 VSL 40 VSR and a 30 BE and he will be hitting better then a guy with 80 CNT 40 PWR 70 VSL 80 VSR and 70 BE. Makes no sense to me sometimes.

20. Give us a prediction for your Big Sky team for this season. I’m going to go right the opposite of your (sweetslave) predictions because your a jinx. You said we would be a wildcard. I say we either win the division or have a very bad record.

20 Questions (Season 27) – sweetsalve

I figured I would kick off the festivities with my own answers to break the ice a little bit.  Please feel free to comment away with any insult you can think of!

1.       Other than your screen name, what name can we call you?

Vance, though I have answered to a lot of names

2. Married? Children? Pets?

I’ll celebrate my 10th wedding anniversary this July 4.  I have 2 boys, Wesley who just turned 3 and Zebulon who is 3 months old.  I used to have 2 cats but we had to get rid of them with the kids.

3. City/State you live in? Hometown where you grew up?

Brewster, Ohio. You don’t know where it is unless you are Amish, work on the railroad, or make swiss cheese or potato chips.  I grew up in St. Clairsville, Ohio which is near Wheeling, WV. You probably don’t know where that is either unless you drive frequently between Columbus and Pittsburgh or grew up in Appalachia.  I’ve also lived in Canton, OH, Adrian, MI, and Lexington, KY

4. What do you do for a living and how long have you done it?

I’ve been a pastor for going on 16 years.

5. Any special meaning for your WIS nickname? Your Big Sky team name?

sweetsalve was he very first username I came up with when I got an e-mail address back in college and have just stuck with it.  I had some random baseball hat that said SALVE on it that I wore and said “sweet” on occassion so someone I came up with that combination.  I don’t drink or I could blame it on college binge drinking.  My Big Sky team name comes from the documented fact that was revealed back in the Big Sky days in Rockne that our current commissioner has enjoyed the company of a few sheep during his GD coaching days.

6. How did you start on What If Sports? What have you played besides HBD?

Evan43 got me started on WIS.  He had me at “historical statistics” and I’ve played something on the site for the past 11 years.  I started out playing baseball Sim Leagues like everybody did back in the day and then jumped into GD as soon as that started and played that alot and now I solely play HBD.

7. Any hobbies or favorite pastimes besides HBD?

Just being a dad.  Most of my free time is spent playing with super hero toys or Lego Batman on what used to be my PS3.

8. What is your list for the top 5 movies of all time?

If you’re like me, as soon as you make this list, you think of at least a dozen more you could have/ should have put on it.  I’ m not going to go with the best movies but my 5 favorite of all time.  In no particular order, I would put Gladiator, Tombstone, Office Space, Shawshank Redemption, and Pulp Fiction.

9. What was the first album/cassette/CD you ever purchased?

It took me a while to remember this, but then it hit me.  When I was a kid, I bought a 45 of the Dukes of Hazard theme song to play on my Smurfs record player.  I played it so much that my older brother one day “accidentally” broke it.

10. What sports team do you cheer for?

Ohio State Buckeyes, Cincinnati Bengals, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

11.  Who is going to win the World Series this season?

I wish I could say the Reds but they are already beat up.  So I’ll pick everyone’s preseason favorite in the Nationals since their pitching is pretty nasty.  a one two of Strasburg-Zimmerman will be hard to top if they are healthy.

12. If you could automatically put one player into the Baseball Hall of Fame who is not already in, who would you choose?

As a Reds fan, the easy answer would be Pete Rose and I can make an argument as to why he should be in the Hall in spite of his gambling, but I have a long list of players that I think should be in.  Included in my list would be all of the steroids era players.  I think we should just treat them like they all used and move on by judging their stats against one another.  But I would go back even further to a player who was accused of wrongdoing and never admitted it and his wrong doing was never thoroughly proven: Shoeless Joe Jackson.  One of the early greats, even Babe Ruth modeled his stance after him.  I think once players die the Hall should move on and allow them to be elected in anyways.  Is it really going to hurt the game to put in a guy who has passed on who allegedly cheated almost 100 years ago? Besides, if he did cheat, it handed the Reds a World Series win so he should be rewarded for that.

13. If you could go back in time and be a part of one team in any sport for one season, which team would you be a part of?

I could go back and choose a lot of great baseball teams that would be easy answers, but I am going with emotions and choosing the 1990 Cincinnati Reds.  Just the sheer highlight of getting to sit next to my childhood heroes for a season, be in first place from wire to wire, and then bring down the heavy favorite Oakland in the series would be amazing to live through again.

14. What is the most memorable sporting event you have attended live?

I haven’t really attended anything of significance other than a final Game 5 of a playoff series between the Indians and Yankees while I was in college.  I went with 2 die hard Indians fans and one Jersey native Yankee fan.  The Yankees were the defending champions and were actually the wildcard as Baltimore won the division.  I don’t remember a whole lot about the game, but I believe it was the 8th inning when Jim Thome laid down a suicide squeeze to bring home the winning run.  That was probably more exciting for a baseball purest than watching a walk off homer.

15.  If WIS hired you for one to choose and develop a new game for the site, what game would you choose to make?

I’m a a pretty big MMA fan, so I think I would go with an MMA game.  Instead of it being fighter based, I would make it camp based and have a budget as a coach to develop fighters and hire coaches and trainers to work with them,  have multiple promotions fighters could make their way through, have different training options for each camp, etc.  It would probably be a nightmare to figure out, but since it is hypothetical, I’m going with that.

16. Tell us about your favorite HBD player.

My favorites all come from the Big Sky and it is hard to choose.  Al Lunar was the start slugger of the team when the world began.  I wish I knew more about the game then to appreciate how good he was when I had him.  Hugh Buckivich was a young pitcher that I acquired in a trade from my friend Evan and that trade panned out great for me as Buckivich was the top pitcher of a team that was very good for a long time.  Ugueth Moya is an all time great slugger in this world that I was able to acquire in his prime.  But my favorite is probably Felipe Marin.  He was my top starter and if I had him now, I would probably never count on him because his splits weren’t super high.  But he had 100 control and some great pitches and was one of the world’s best pitchers in the early going.  After all these season, he is still top 5 in the BSA in K to BB ratio.

17. Without giving way all of your secrets, what is your GM philosophy?

Rule number one for me is never count on free agency.  I am just to cheap, even with fake money.  I cannot come to spend big money on players.  I can only think of one big free agent signing for me in the BSA and that was Richie Wright way back in season 3.  He was probably the best closer in the game at the time and his signing put my team over the top at the time.  But my philosophy is really adapt to what you have.  You have to focus your budget and your team around what you have, what you need, and what the world values.

18. Do you have a rival in the Big Sky? If not, pick one!

Kansas City is a minor rival since Evan and I are such good friends, but being in different leagues doesn’t make it much of a rivalry.  But I would probably say Richmond since Andy and I have been in this world since its beginning.  It’s pretty awesome that our division is made up of all original owners now with the return of Steve and Joe.

19. If you could change one thing about HBD, what would you change?

The old easy answer used to be coach hiring, and it still needs more changes, but the worst thing is scouting budgets.  Scouting should work completely differently than it does and player development should be changed and scouting be more critical in it.

20.  Give us a prediction for your Big Sky team for this season.

This team will win over 100 game easily, but I have this eerie feeling about the team I have built.  I feel like I am destined to be the 90s Braves and never win a series even if I have the best team.  Last season was just the start I am afraid.
